The Sixth Form staff have been involved in some exciting and innovative practice with their Sixth Form classes as the school has participated in a trailblazing county project into Sixth Form Teaching and Learning.

Jonathan fed back to the other 13 schools in the project on 24 June 2010 at Villiers Park. We will be participating again in the project this coming year. Hopefully the findings below will inspire even more staff to take up the challenge and try something different. Although a Sixth Form project, the ideas used are just as valid anywhere in the school.

Learning Conversation

This resource is an excellent way to gauge how learners are feeling about their progress and development in their subjects. We run them each half term and allow the findings to lead into 1 to 1 discussion between teacher and students. Hopefully you will feel confident and honest enough to share the findings with another colleague – it is simply another way to open conversation, which cannot be a bad thing. Just don’t forget to change the date each time you use them!

Socrative

Another great resource to allow you to develop your AfL practice – create surveys, pop quizzes or a discussion forum for your class and get responses in real time that you can collate and use to plan future learning – can be created using a nuber of different devices for easy use.

Assessment for Learning in the 21st Century

AFL strategies have the most profound impact when they are deployed intrinsically in lessons rather than as additions or ‘tag-ons’. Such practice can be achieved via intellectual debate with colleagues concerning the impact on learning that potential methodologies will have. This resource, which was used by Mr Watson in the key-note speech on the January training day, has been designed to help in this area.

Successful use of formative marking

This is an excellent resource from Mr Tzellos concerning how to make sure that your marking makes a real difference in furthering student progress

Suggested Strategies

This booklet is filled to the brim with suggestions for effective assessment for learning. As this will be a key focus for staff development this year it is important to acquaint yourself and to trial some of the suggested strategies in your classroom. You would certainly not wish to do everything but if something resonates with you then it is certainly worth a try

Whole class feedback techniques to show progress in a lesson

These are some excellent techniques that can be used to allow you and the students to evaluate the progress made

Secret admirer

This is a clever way to allow students to evaluate the learning of their peers in a non threatening environment

Plenary Dice 1

Plenary Dice 2

These dice are an excellent way to evaluate learning and plan the next steps
